Root Canal Treatment at SJ Smith & Associates

Addressing the Core of the Matter

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontics, is a dental procedure designed to combat bacterial infections within the central region of your tooth, commonly referred to as the root canal. These infections can stem from various causes, including tooth decay, compromised fillings, or physical tooth damage.

Indicators for Root Canal Treatment

When the dental pulp, located at the center of your tooth, becomes infected, inflammation may occur, leading to symptoms such as a loose tooth and pain during biting, chewing, or exposure to hot or cold stimuli.

Although the pain may temporarily subside when the pulp dies, the infection can persist within the root canal system, manifesting later with symptoms such as:

Ignoring an infected tooth can exacerbate the condition. If you experience toothache, prompt consultation with a dentist is crucial.

The Root Canal Treatment Process
  1. Diagnosis through X-rays: If X-rays reveal an infected dental pulp, root canal treatment becomes necessary.
  2. Bacteria Removal and Canal Filling: The procedure involves meticulous removal of bacteria from the root canal, followed by filling and sealing the tooth. Multiple sessions may be required, with temporary fillings and antibiotics between sessions to prevent further infection.
  3. Sealing with a Crown: Once bacteria and temporary fillings are removed, the tooth is sealed with a proper root canal filling and potentially a crown for added protection.
The Entire Treatment is Painless

The entire root canal treatment is conducted under local anesthesia, ensuring a painless experience for the patient.

Long-Term Tooth Survival

Following the completion of the treatment, your tooth is expected to endure for an extended period. While no immediate follow-up treatment is typically required, maintaining good oral hygiene is essential. In the rare event of a recurrence of infection, a repeat treatment may be considered.

At SJ Smith & Associates, we prioritize the effectiveness and comfort of root canal treatment, offering a comprehensive solution to address dental infections at their core.

Five Benefits of Root Canal Treatment at SJ Smith & associates

1. Pain Relief and Improved Comfort

Root Canal Treatment effectively alleviates the pain associated with an infected tooth. By removing the infected pulp and addressing the source of the discomfort, patients experience relief and improved overall comfort.

2. Preservation of Natural Teeth

Rather than opting for tooth extraction, Root Canal Treatment allows for the preservation of the natural tooth. This is crucial for maintaining proper dental function, bite alignment, and preventing the need for more extensive dental work like bridges or implants.

3. Prevention of Further Infection

The procedure involves the thorough removal of bacteria from the root canal, preventing the spread of infection to surrounding tissues. Filling and sealing the canal further protect against future bacterial intrusion, reducing the risk of recurrent infections.

4. Aesthetic Considerations

Root Canal Treatment helps retain the natural appearance of the tooth. While the tooth may require a crown after the procedure for added protection, this maintains the overall aesthetic integrity of the smile.

5. Functional Restoration

With the removal of infected tissue and proper sealing, Root Canal Treatment restores the functionality of the tooth. Patients can bite, chew, and speak without the limitations or discomfort associated with a compromised tooth.

At SJ Smith & Associates, we emphasise the numerous advantages of Root Canal Treatment, providing a comprehensive and patient-focused approach to address dental infections while promoting long-term oral health.

What a wonderful Dentist, so friendly and efficient. Working very long hours and travelling to and from London. My kids and I have just been for our first appointment, fixed a couple of problems in no time, the dental nurse was also fantastic and reassuring. The dentist even took the time to show me how I can help my child look after his teeth whilst he was in the chair. Very happy patients. Thank you

Used this dentist for the first time as a new patient. The dentist I saw was from London, he comes up for 3 days every week. He was just fabulous and sorted a few problems within no time. His assistant was also very good, and extremely friendly, making sure that I was fine throughout the procedure. I did have to wait for a while to be seen as they were very busy, but they apologised, and I understand that after the pandemic they are playing catch up. Not their fault! I would highly recommend this practice.
